KUCHING: ASSAR Group has donated a three-storey shophouse worth RM480,000 in Sri Aman to the Iban Women Charitable Trust (IWCT).

The handing over of the documents to the property was held at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here and witnessed by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang yesterday.

Speaking at the event, Jabu said the rural community would need the cooperation and support of both the public and private sectors, including non-governmental organisations, in the implementation of programmes to benefit them.

"There is really a need for us to reach out to the rural community so that they can catch up with the government's transformation programmes and to achieve Vision 2020," he said, adding this was a collective responsibility of everyone, especially in Sarawak, where rural population is scattered throughout the state.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of Iban Women Charitable Trust Dato Sri Empiang Jabu revealed that currently, the ground floor of the shophouse was being rented out to a cooperative which used it for a restaurant.

"The restaurant is quite popular and enjoying good business. We collect the rental fee which can be used to finance our charity programmes and activities," she said.

She added that the first and second floors of the shophouse would be used for the organisation's functions and charity events.

"We have been working on charity events for the past two years and our objectives are to assist the natives (Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Orang Ulu and others) in education, health, economic and all kinds of aspects," said Empiang.

Meanwhile, ASSAR Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Bujang Mohd Nor said the donation of the shophouse to a charitable organisation was part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR).

"It is part of our responsibility to take care of society, especially the needy in the rural areas, with the profits earned from investments," he said, adding that ASSAR also wished to reach out more to the needy and the less fortunate in the future.

ASSAR Group is owned by Permodalan ASSAR Sdn Bhd (PASB), a state-owned investment company with well-diversified portfolios of investments in financial services, agro and resource-based industries, property development and construction, services and technology, manufacturing, trading and many more.
